They stepped out of the exam hall after a good two hours of anxiousness and contemplation. The day was almost over. Now, the only thing they have to go through is that stupid prom neither of them had been eager to attend.

“On a scale of one to ten, how well did you do on the test?” asked Aaranie.

“Like an eight? How ‘bout you?” replied Alesha.

“Uh, a two?” she admitted sheepishly, which was only met with a sigh of disappointment from the latter.

“At least the hard part is over, now we just need to worry about that stupid dance thing.” Aaranie groaned in frustration.

“You got a date?”

“You think?”

“Figured,” Alesha replied nonchalantly.

“You’re dateless too right?” Aaranie asked carefully.

“Apparently so, I don’t care so it doesn’t really matter I guess. He was a dick anyway, so I just ended it then and there.” Alesha scoffed as the duo walked down the hallways, continuing their conversation.

“As you should.”

Both of them dropped by a nearby cafe near their high school to get some grub and potentially gossip about whatever they had witnessed throughout the week. Same old, most of the time Aaranie was the one doing most of the talking, while Alesha was doing most of the listening. That was how they were.

“So like, do we still want to go to the dance? Or should we just play hooky?” Alesha asked as she took a sip out of her mocha frappe.

“I guess it wouldn’t matter if we showed up or not. I mean, it’s not like they’re taking the attendance.” Aaranie chortled as she swirled her caramel frappe, whipping cream pooling around the rim of the glass, threatening to overflow.

“It would be kind of a waste though, I mean it is our last event before going to university.” Alesha sighed, setting her drink down.

“Fair point, so I guess we just show up then? So what if we don’t have dates? Most people usually show up in friend groups anyway.” Aaranie pressed.

“I guess you’re right, wouldn’t hurt trying.”

With that, the girls spent the rest of the afternoon getting ready for that special night. They wore the prettiest dress they owned, did their hair and makeup, and slipped on the most majestic pair of heels that they could find. Their feet would for sure be sore by the end of the night, but all In the means of beauty, right?

It was half-past seven and both of them had just arrived at the venue. The sky was pitch black, the only source of light being the street lights that flickered continuously. Saying that they were nervous would be an understatement, but how could they not be? After today, everything was going to change for both of them. Their entire life was gonna be flipped upside down as they were going to be thrust into the spiral rollercoaster of adulthood.

So with that in mind, they were going to live this last night to the fullest; as teens with no responsibility whatsoever. As soon as they entered the compound, music had filled their ears, colourful lights dancing around them. This was going to be a night to remember.

And just like that, hours had passed by. They danced until their heels ached, they sang, they ate, and they cried their eyes out knowing that an experience like this wouldn’t come again. They also flicked off their exes and the group of girls they always hated.

They did everything.

The night was slowly coming to an end so they found themselves sitting in the corner of the room with another drink in hand, despite the drink being non-alcoholic, they seemed to get more and more intoxicated as the night progressed, probably due to the lack of sleep. And with intoxication, came the truth. They talked for what seemed like hours, most of the other students had already left the venue. It was just them and a couple other stragglers.

“What a night, huh?” Aaranie slurred as she swirled her drink in her hand.

“Eventful at that.” Alesha agreed.

“So, this is it huh. Tomorrow you’re gonna go your way, and I’m going to go towards mine.” Aaranie said with clenched teeth.

“I guess so. Didn’t really expect this time to arrive to fast.” Alesha sighed, taking a sip of her drink.

They sat in silence, savouring the moment. To most people, silence signified awkwardness, but that was not the case with them. Silence was sacred, silence was something they cherished. It gave them a moment to think and process everything that had happened and is happening.

“So I guess you’re gonna get back to casual dating?” Aaranie asked.

“Hah, honestly I don’t think I am. I jump into relationships only to come out disappointed. I don’t know if it’s me, or if it’s him but I can’t seem to keep myself invested in the relationship. Eventually, I’ll just get tired, then it ends up ending the next day. I feel like I’m just gonna stop dating men in general. I haven’t had time to myself recently.” Alesha answered.  Aaranie nodded her head in agreement.

“How about you? Any plans for a fling?” Alesha asked. Aaranie shook her head with a sigh,

“Same problem here, I don’t plan to go into a relationship any time soon. I need time to kinda sort my thoughts.” Aaranie said.

“Sort your thoughts?” Alesha raised one brow with interest and concern.

“I’ll be honest with you, I honestly can’t see myself getting invested in a relationship with anyone else other than you. We’ve known each other since we were practically children, you’re basically the only person I’ve managed to stick with my entire life. Sorry if this makes you feel weird though.” She said, burying her face into her palms in frustration.

“We’re on the same page then,” Aaranie perked up at her reply.

“I also find myself favouring our relationship more than others. You’re the only person I can tolerate honestly. It’s hard to imagine myself spending my entire life with someone else, but weirdly so, it seems possible with you.” Alesha chuckled.

“Alright then, let’s make a deal then,” Aaranie said

“Shoot.” Alesha leaned forward interested at her offer.

“If we end up running into each other again in 20 years, and we’re both still single, let’s get married.”

“Aight bet,”

Both of them let out chortles if laughter. Weirdly enough, this all seemed right. Their bond was more than friendship it was more than love, it was trust, understanding and loyalty. Something neither of them has had with anyone else.

After hours of fumbling, the night had ended with both of them knocked out cold on Aaranie’s couch in her humble abode. Aaranie woke up the next day to an empty space right beside her. The shorter had left before she had woken up, leaving no note or message, but she didn’t mind that. They both had their own lives to carry, it was time to move on.

And if they were meant to be, then they’d meet once again.

April 7th 2044 11pm

Alesha walked down the roadside of the city, shoulders occasionally brushing against the people who walked against her. Her heels clunking on the concrete ground, loud, obnoxious and bold. She winced in pain, after 20 fucking years, she never got used to wearing those god damn stilettos.

She had planned to drop by a new bar that had recently opened. It was the first time in a while where she had the day off, so she planned to make the most of it. Her entire life up ‘til now had been consumed by work. No men, no love, no dating(well maybe the occasional sex), just work. And to be frank, that was how she liked it, no distractions, no complicated problems, just her and herself achieving things she had never even fathomed to think about. She was proud of how far she had gotten herself. Hard work is paying off and maybe she could even settle down soon.

She entered the bar, taking in the chic and expensive aura it emitted. She already knew she’d enjoy going to this place. Sitting down in front of the counter she ordered herself a drink. She had planned to spend this entire night by herself and her trusty drink, reminiscing old memories. Of course, there were occasionally some guys who had tried to get her attention, offering to buy her a drink, but she paid no attention to them.

She was about to order herself another drink when the main door opened, for some reason her head turned to the new customer and that’s when they both matched eyes. It felt as if she had been taken back 20 years. All the memories came crashing into her like a bulldozer.

Even if a hundred, no, a thousand years were to past, she could still feel the familiarity and warmth in those light brown eyes. And it seemed like the latter felt the exact same way too.

The two women stood there staring at each other for what seemed like an eternity. The odds of this happening was slim to none, almost as if all the planets had aligned, this was something only fate could grant.

No matter how much time has passed, Alesha could always recognise the curly hair, the tan skin, the height. The woman who stood before here hadn’t changed the slightest bit. She was still the Aaranie she grew up loving.

“Well I’ll be dammed,” Alesha let out a soft scoff.

“Fancy seeing you here, or anywhere for a matter of fact,” Aaranie said taking a seat next to her.

“I can’t tell if it’s a dream or a fucking miracle. I mean what are the odds?” Alesha gaped. Sometimes they felt as if the universe was on their side, rooting for their happiness. This was one of the occasions that seemed to prove their theory.

“It’s been what, 20 years more or less since I’ve even seen your face,” Aaranie said, still shocked.

“I can see that you grew, even more,” Alesha grumbled.

“Hmm, did I?” Aaranie teased only to be met with a flick on the forehead from the shorter.

“Very funny, flagpole.”

Slowly silence engulfed them, both of them thinking of the exact same thing. But Aaranie spoke first,

“So when are we signing our marriage contract?” she asked playfully as she wriggled her eyebrows.

“Pfft, ass” Alesha scoffed.

Laughter erupted from the both of them, it’s been so long, yet neither of them had changed the slightest bit, at least to the both of them, the woman before them seemed the exact same as the person they were 20 years back. The same energy, the same eyes, the same spark. It was all perfect.

Deep down inside, they both knew that they’d end up together eventually. That was how it was, no matter how much they were separated, they’d always managed to find the way right back to each other, where they rightfully belonged.
